Patrolling the seas with silence and stealth, the 17th Virginia Class nuclear submarine, The USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790), will be one of the newest, most innovative fast-attack submarines in the United States Navy’s fleet.
The SSN 790 will be the third boat commissioned with the name “USS SOUTH DAKOTA.” The first was the Armored Cruiser USS SOUTH DAKOTA (ACR-9) which eventually was renamed the USS HURON. This made way for its big brother the historic battleship BB-57. The Battleship SOUTH DAKOTA was one of the most decorated battleships in WWII. While the SSN 790’s predecessor roared through the seas with her 16-inch guns, the new USS SOUTH DAKOTA will be a silent protector, continuing the tradition of being ever ready to defend the safety and security of the United States of America.
